Extended Benefits of a Morning Routine
When you have healthy habits in your routines, not only is it going to benefit you at face value, but this will in turn ripple out into other areas of your life.
For example, if you want to introduce more healthy snacks during the day and want to make this a routine, you’ll start to notice other health benefits from this small change.
Maybe, in this example, you begin to sleep better because you have enough nutrients during the day. Or perhaps your skin starts to clear up from replacing an unhealthy option with a health-conscious one. The list goes on and on!
The ripple effect is the catalyst to you stating a new routine.
So even if you just pick one or two from the list below, just know that you’re on the right track towards healthier habits!
Enjoying Breakfast Outside
Sometimes just enjoying your coffee or tea outside is just what you need to start your spring day!
Being out in nature, while you enjoy your first moments can really set the pace for the rest of the day. Super calm, and can let you gather your thoughts before the clock starts!
A Morning Walk
A quick stretch, a stroll around the block, both of these can set you up for an amazing day!
Walking outside in nature is show to boost your mood as well as improve your overall health and wellness!
Like other types of aerobic exercise, walking, especially out in nature, stimulates the production of neurotransmitters and endorphins in the brain that help improve your mental state.
Even just a stretch here and there throughout your day can be the first steps in the right direction. Remember, it’s not about quantity, and this is true with bodywork as well.
If you practice just a few quality stretches, think of how much more that will help rather than stressing yourself about squeezing a 2-hour practice into your already-jammed-pack day? Start small and work up to those lengthier practices!
Start a Garden
Tending to the garden in the morning can not only bring you fresh ingredients, but it can lower your stress and boost your mental health!
Even if you think your green thumb is less than emerald, starting out with easy, hearty outdoor plants can prove otherwise! Ask your local nursery about what plants thrive in your area and which ones are low maintenance.

Clean up your Social Media
Have you been feeling drained after some downtime scrolling through Instagram? Or maybe just had one too many eye rolls at your Facebook feed when you’re trying to relax?
Social media can be such an inspiration for positivity and growth, but without darkness they’re cannot be light.
There can be some truly negative people who pop into your social media world. Sometimes they’re going through a tough time and need a venting place, other times they could just not be a great match for your personality.
Whatever the reason is, we just need to unplug from those triggers when we’re overburdened with our own stress. Allow yourself to recharge and enjoy the spring!
Optimize Your Schedule
With more opportunities for doing all of the fun spring activities, it can be a struggle to juggle it all on top of a “normal day.”
I don’t know how many times I had to catch myself because of my whirlwind-tendencies, but slowing down is a must when you’re trying to fit more seasonal activities into your day!
As you’re taking on more to your schedule, give yourself two breaths.
Inhale-exhale, inhale-exhale, then respond and react. This method has been bounced around for everything but it’s so simple that it works.
When you have something to judge your time off of, then you can begin to tune in more easily to your reactions. Something physical attached to a thought will bring it out of the unknown and into something you can follow up on.
Psst - this tip is especially good for those who like to say yes to everything as their knee-jerk reaction!
Reevaluate Your Time
This is a great time to start reevaluating your schedule and how you spend your time.
In your spring morning routine, take time to look at the day ahead. Is there anything that you could rearrange or delegate out to make your schedule more balanced?
I used to drive myself completely nuts on fitting everything into one day, trying to get everything marked off of the list and falling flat on my face by the end of the day.
Look for things that aren’t serving your needs the way that they should be, and if there’s a way to delegate them out.
Theme Your Journal
A shift in season is a perfect time to add themes to your journaling prompts!
You could add in prompts that help you to intertwine the spring or those cute bujo themes that pop up around this time of the year!
If you’re new to journaling, take a look at the complete guide on finding out what type of journal best suits your personality and your lifestyle! It’s a full of every single type of journal out there and what they’re pros and cons are. Check it out here!
Simplifying your thoughts into a maximum of 5 words and plugging it into your planner is a great start to get your foot into journaling. If you’re just starting out, write the 3-5 words that you would describe the whole day. Even if you’re too tired at the end of the day, write it down in the morning when you’re looking over the day.
Make a Spring Reading List
Spring is always a fantastic time for getting all of those books crossed off of your list, right?
If you’re looking for the perfect time to catch up on your reading, spring can be a great season to start. Not only does it give you time to sit down and make a reading list, but there are so many ways to enjoy reading.
Even when I couldn’t find the time to do anything else, I would read an article while I was waking up. I’d have my cup of coffee and paged through a few blogs to get my day started off with positivity.
If you’re even more pressed for time, I have been really digging an audiobook chapter in the morning while I get ready. I fire-up my wireless speaker and have it run while I get ready for the day.
Audiobooks are amazing to start the day with and can be a lot more calming than turning the television on. If you haven’t had a chance to check one out, Audible is a great place to start and it gives you access to literally every book under the sun.
Sometimes they offer a free 30-day trial to test them out, check it out here to see if you can try it free for 30 days.*
As of right now, I’ve been listening to The Self Care Solution* which focuses on the energy aspect of self-care and to really make the most of your time during the day. A must listen/read for a deeper understanding of self care.
THE SECRET OF STICKING TO A ROUTINE
Your morning routine is all about you. No if’s, and’s, or but’s, it’s all about you and what works for you. In the list above, you do not have to follow all of them to be successful.
You can pick one, own it, and feel 100x’s better than before you started.
When you’re adding new morning routines ideas to your day to day, ask yourself the most important question of: “how will this make me feel better?” Allow yourself to answer this honestly when you’re adding something to your routine.
If you add in something that you’re only lukewarm to, that feeling of overwhelm that you’re already feeling with feel 10x’s worse than before you started.
When your goal is to flourish from your routine, look for routine ideas that fit your personality, lifestyle, and schedule. Some ideas take a lot of time and effort, which may not be the best for you right now. And that’s okay!
Listen to what your body and mind are leading you too. Sometimes the day’s self care could be going to bed an hour early because you’re tired.
Scheduling and planning are great and help a lot of successful people stick to their goals. But what you don’t need in your morning routine is rigidity and “rule-abiding.”
Think of your mornings as the tone you’re able to set.
How will you go out into the world on this day?
